I was surprise that Ibrahim knows Chinese. This make me feel so friendly, because I also speak Chinese. Give an example of a time you learned from someone else’s experiences.
Once before, I had some problem to get along with one of my friends. I didn’t want to talk to her, and see her. However, I know this was not the right attitude I should have. I started to think what they will tell me if they know this situation. Once I think about it, I feel much more comfortable.

2. Was there a time when someone’s experience was not like your own? Explain your answer.
Everyone is different. Although, I met a lot of people who don’t share the same value with me and don’t have the same experience as I have, it makes no different to me. I just think I am who I am, and you are who you are. I would really like to hear their different experience.

3. What role do older friends and relatives play in your life?
I really like to get along with older people. I can really learn a lot from them. One is English, and others are chemistry and the world food supply. When I was in my country, I had learned some basic chemistry from my school but did very poor on that. Because I did poor on the chemistry, I had no reason to like it. However, I found I started to like it after I had taken one chemistry course at Montgomery College. I think the professor influenced me a lot. She always explained every detail very clear and very patient to answer all of questions that students had. I started to feel the chemistry is not that hard. Chemistry is not like a mystery for me anymore.
Because the pervious learned about the chemistry, I am now doing fine on my chemistry course at University of Maryland. We learn about how matters exist in the world, how electrons act, how light different in various range, and atomic structure etc. There are too many things need to cover and too many things I need to learn; however, I found interesting in that. Once you started to learn chemistry, you will find everything in the world is amazing.

Washoe

I want to share a very interesting video about chimpanzee, Washoe. I watched this video for the oral project of my class. Before I watch it, I though it might be a little bit boring because it is a document film. However, I have to say it is a really interesting video which I highly recommended. The film is called Apes and Sign Language. In the film, two psychologists adopted Washoe and were trying to teach Washoe America Sign Language. It was really surprise me that chimpanzee can somehow use America Sign Language to communicate with human. Washoe used ASL to ask for food, toys and tickle, etc. Chimpanzees also have the emotion like human do. Washoe got very depress when her baby was taken away from her. Before I watch this video, I do not really think chimpanzee is cute. After watch this video, I think I start to like them and feel they are cute.

What I Have Learned this Week in this Class

I have been in the UMEI005 class for about three weeks. Each day we learn a little bit about the English grammar, reading, listening, and writing skills. For this week, we have leaned noun clauses and pronouns for grammar. I used to think it was the kind of easy stuff. However, I started to realize I have a lot to learn. We also read the article about the differences and similarities between human and nonhuman primate. I feel it was a really interesting topic that human and monkeys, apes, and other primates have so many alike. It was really surprise me that nonhuman primate do know to use tools and can learn to use language.

About myself :)

Hi! My name is Hsingchuan Hsieh. I am 21 years old, and I am from Taiwan. I have been in the United States for two years, and this is my first semester as an undergraduate student at University of Maryland. My family is in Taiwan, but my younger brother, Nick , who might also come to the United States for his education. Why am I here in the United States? Before I came to the University of Maryland, I was a student at Montgomery College.
